From the Publisher:
Build a Unicorn Army. Betray your friends. Unicorns are your friends now.
Unstable Unicorns is a strategic card game about everyone’s two favorite things: Destruction and Unicorns!
Learn how unstable your friendships really are.
You start with a Baby Unicorn in your Stable. SO CUTE!
But don’t get too attached, because even Baby Unicorns aren’t safe in this game! There are over 20 Magical Unicorns to collect, and each has a special power. Build your Unicorn Army as fast as you can, or be destroyed by one of your so-called friends! Seek revenge or protect your stable using your Magic! Sound easy? Not so fast. Someone could have a Neigh Card (Get it? Neigh?) and send the game into MADNESS! The first person to complete their Unicorn Army shall hereafter be known as The Righteous Ruler of All Things Magical… at least until the next game. Good luck.

Review:
Overview:
Unstable Unicorns has been sitting on our shelf for quite sometime. I believe my wife and kids got this game for me as a gift. Don’t ask me what they were celebrating though as that escapes me like a lot of things tend to do. We recently piled into a minivan and drove like 12+ hours (one way) to attend a family vacation. Needless to say it was quite stressful on all of us. Saving graces of this trip (at least for me) would probably be summed up to running and Unstable Unicorns. Thank goodness my 15 almost 16 year old son was the one learning and teaching the game. May i say he did an excellent job? Well, regardless of how you responded in your head, I’ve got to give him KUDOS!~
Rules & Setup:
The RULEBOOK which includes setup can be found HERE.
Theme and Mechanics:
Are you a fan of unicorns? While I could probably claim to not be, this game didn’t disappoint in the least. At the very lowest level, I’d say this is a set collection game of sorts because your trying to build your stable of unicorns from a baby unicorn to 6 or 7 unicorns in the stable depending upon how many people are playing. My son says it plays better with more people. I’d have to agree with him. It also turned out to be quite a TAKE-THAT game, at least in our family. Don’t get me started on alliances as there were also plenty of those as well. I liked the mechanics and the theme seemed to hold true to the game. However, I think I’d have to disagree with them that a bearded unicorn should be labeled as unstable (probably due to the fact that I’m a big fan of beards. lol) . I do believe that they could easily slap a different theme on the game and still have it work as well. I’m excited to try some of the expansions as there seem to be a lot.
Gameplay:
The rulebook referenced above seems to sum it up nicely. But, you have 4 phases of your turn: Beginning of turn phase, draw phase, action phase & End of turn phase.
Beginning of turn phase: can be a bit tricky if you’re not paying attention to the cards in your stable as some of them have actions that take place if this card is in your stable at the beginning of your turn. So I suggest you put away your electronic device that you probably are checking between turns of any game ( or am I just talking about myself?).
Draw: I’d imagine this phase to be self explanatory. But just in case, draw 1 card from the deck.
Action phase: Play a card from your hand or DRAW and additional card from the deck.
End of turn phase: DISCARD until the number of cards in your hand does not exceed the card limit. The hand limit is 7 cards (unless otherwise stated).
Go around the table with everyone doing what was just said until someone fills their stable to the win condition.
Artwork and Components:
Lovely job in my opinion.
The Good:
The possibilities for this game seem endless and will be even more so once we acquire the expansions. lol.
The Other:
As stated previously I’m kind of biased towards a good beard so calling that kind of unicorn unstable may not be for everyone. (Plus bearded unicorn lacks any power, there is power in a good beard.)
Also, I wasn’t too crazy on how my kids thwarted my plans like that. Probably not the games fault.
Final Thoughts:
I’m glad we finally got Unstable Unicorns to the table. Before my daughters had just got it to the table to look at the unicorns. When time permits I can’t wait to get it back to the table. Plus I can’t wait to get the expansions. We also own ” Here to slay ” that has been hanging out on my shelf of opportunity for just as long. If it’s anything like Unstable Unicorns, we’ve got to get it off this shelf soon! But, please don’t make me cram into the car for another 24+ hour trip to just get it on the table.
Also, I just found out that UNSTABLE GAMES will also be launching Twisted Cryptids on Kickstarter October 1.
We played it on the coffee table at the AirBnb we stayed at. I think this game is just perfect for our
Tables4Games Board Game Table, but then again I don’t know of a game that this table wouldn’t be good for!
