Foreword:

I received this review copy from the Publisher to check out. Thank you for giving EBGs a chance to see your project. I played the 1st edition of the game, which apparently had some quality-of-life improvements. I found that online through BGG which linked me to their website where they have some things written there to explain the updates. If you have a 1st edition copy, you will definitely want to check that out because there are obvious flaws otherwise.
From the Publisher:

Sphere of Life : Mythical Forest is a simple collection card game that will be enjoyed by the whole family.  The game foresees cards to build collections and trick your friends.

Disclaimer: The publisher provided the 1st edition copy of Spheres of Life. The opinions expressed in the review are completely my own.

Review:

Initial Impression/Components:
The art for this game is really good, my favorite part, in fact. The box and card quality were standard industry grade.
Favorite:
The art was my favorite part. The theme and noble vs corrupted animals tie the game together. In this particular case I felt the game leaned heavily on the artwork to make it work for me.

Least Favorite:

The rulebook was a tough read. It was only one large sheet with sections on the front and back, but it wasn’t well written. There were flaws in the wordings on the cards as well. I get stuck on details rather hard when they don’t make sense. My impression after reading the rules and testing the game was that this game may not have originally been in English but was loosely translated or written by someone with good, but not great, English. As mentioned above, I am led to believe these things were remedied on future editions and works for Spheres of Life. I cannot confirm that personally.

Mechanics:

– Set Collection
– Hand Management
– Drafting
– Variable player powers

Rules:

The game has a very simple set collection core with some card drafting and light card abilities that are done in phases.

The rules are available online at the link below. The rules I had came with the game, I did find these after but I’m not going to cross compare. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0344/0505/6647/files/SOL_Rules_1.5_InstructionBooklet.pdf?v=1702540332

Areas they did well:

– Artwork
– Quality Components
– Round phases

Areas they could have improved:

– Wording and explanations
– Better card abilities and choices (less copies more uniques)
– The gameplay was flat
– Felt incomplete

Overall:

The game is a bare-bones, light-weight, set collection game.
Final Thoughts:
Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me. You can’t like them all! But hey, that doesn’t mean it might not be your thing. I always encourage people to check out more on the titles they are interested in so that they can make informed decisions. I felt this game simply didn’t have enough to it to make it a game that I’d have in my collection. I went through the motions to complete it. It was quick: learning and playing the game can be done in the time advertised. I will also be upfront that I only played it once. The players agreed we had no trouble with it and knew everything we needed from a single play.
I’ll see you next time, back here at The Game Table,
