Review:

Today, I will be talking about Milk Carton Dice, which is on Kickstarter now.

You may remember me reviewing some products from 1985 Games Dungeon Terrain tiles, Dice, and more earlier this year, which also included Mystery Dice Bags. You may also recall that I have reviewed at least 2 other sets of dice from various companies in the past year.

One takeaway from me with the 1985 Mystery Dice Bags was that overall, I had better luck finding dice that I could resonate with, relative to the others I tried.

To quote :

“1985 games also supplies their own Mystery Dice bags! While I have taken a look at some other dice bags recently, I will say that not all that I have received from similar Mystery Dice sets was 100% to my liking. In the past, this could perhaps at least partially be attributed to the random nature of Mystery Dice bags ; you never know what you are going to get until you actually open a sealed bag, and you therefore do not have the benefit of being able to “try before you buy”, so to speak.”

Quality was overall quite good. As with all things random, though some sets were not as much to my liking as others. Well, for their latest product, all randomness will be eliminated and you will know exactly what you will be getting when you see a box of Milk Carton Dice.

Taking after some of the more mainstream Japanese  trends, these dice sets come in a carton-full of cuteness, with a Kawaii art style that matches what you may find in many Asian toy stores. In a nutshell, it is all about kittens in boxes.

The boxes themselves depict the name of the kitty (a metal pin for clothing)that comes in each box, as well as what its associated dice and sticker. The dice included are  a d20, d12, d10, d8, d6, d4 and a 10’s / percentage dice. So there is no confusion at all as to what you will be receiving.

If this sounds incredibly straightforward, it is because it is. Indeed, it feels so straightforward that there is almost little for me to review aside from workmanship and aesthetics, which are both qualitatively and thematically excellent.

My kids were of course quick to pair up with their favorite colors and kittens. As you can see by the water bottle, one particular sticker didn’t manage to last very long before being placed on a water bottle—just mere minutes from opening the box!

The metal fabrication on the pins are also worthy of mention, these will not bend easily! I have had many throughout the years that got quite knocked out of shape, and I do not think these Milk Carton pins will exhibit the same wear and tear of other sets in my collection.

But there was one “magical” thing that I noticed when opening the boxes. And may just chalk this up to creative marketing and repackaging of surplus goods, but whatever the psychological underpinnings of my change of heart and mind may be, the truth is that something about my perception of certain sets of 1985 dice changed in the past few months.

Because, as stated earlier, I definitely did not resonate well with some of the random sets of dice I received a few months ago from 1985 Games. I would even dare to call one particular set I received as being ugly in my own sense of aesthetics.

And wouldn’t you know, I received an identical colored set, particularly with Kala the Kitten’s box.

Now this particular set of dice consists of brown and green swirls, much like the kiwi it is associated with. And as mentioned, the first time around, I did not find these colors appealing at all.

But this second time around, I find the visuals to be much more appealing to my eye. I know it is likely just having a cute picture of a cat to associate with the dice, and as much as I think myself immune to forms of mental trickery, it actually does (to my own surprise) work on me — I would have absolutely no problem using these dice as long as their accompanying kitty pin and/or sticker were present at the same table with me.

So the cuteness overload did indeed have its intended effect.

And as with the Mystery Dice Bags, I also feel that these would be ideal for gifts and stocking stuffers.

All-in-all, I would say the Milk Carton Dice are not boxes of (milk) duds. They have a fresh sense of appeal and aesthetics, and are visual pleasers. I make no guarantees that you will necessarily like every dice color that you get in the upcoming 12-packs that will be on crowdfunding, but at least now you will be able to know and see exactly what you will get when opening a box and take it from there.
