Your deck starts out a small sad set of Estates and Coppers, but you hope that by the end of the game it will be brimming with Gold, Provinces, and the inhabitants and structures of your kingdom. Over one hundred thirty-two septillion possible Kingdom combinations, 500+ cards, 15 and counting expansions, and ongoing promo packs make Dominion one of the most extensive and replayable boardgames in the hobby. Review:

Overview:

Dominion is THE deck-building game. Immerse yourself in a medieval fantasy world where you play as a monarch in pursuit of power and recognition.

Game Franchises:

Many franchises create multiple versions of a game or release expansions, offering a fresh gaming experience with each new installment. I’m thinking specifically of franchises like Ticket to Ride or Villainous, where some games can be played independently or combined with others to enrich the gameplay. Each version brings its own set of new features, whether it’s new boards, game mechanics, or cards, providing players with endless possibilities to explore and enjoy the game’s universe.

The Dominion family takes this concept to the extreme. Dominion has expanded so much over the years that it’s impossible to play with cards from every box in a single game. The franchise has grown over the years into a true collection of unique titles. Each game box in the Dominion series comes with its own special rules and card sets, offering a distinctive gameplay experience with each iteration. This type of stand-alone expansion is very appealing for a group of players who share similar tastes but don’t want to buy the exact same game twice.

Dominion – as such:

At the heart of Dominion is building your own deck of cards, which evolves throughout the game. You start with a small set of basic starting cards, then use your resources to acquire new cards, thus improving your deck and strengthening your position.

Each turn is divided into several phases, including Action, Buy, and Cleanup. Use your Action cards to perform special actions, buy new cards to enhance your deck, and prepare for the next round by cleaning up your play area.

Victory in Dominion depends on your ability to manage your deck efficiently, anticipate your opponents’ moves, and accumulate victory points. Points are earned by owning domain cards, but these are initially dead weight in your deck.

One of Dominion’s greatest strengths lies in its variety. With dozens of kingdom cards available, each game offers a unique experience, requiring strategic adaptation to each new configuration. Additionally, the inclusion of expansions allows you to explore new game mechanics and extend the replayability of the base game.

The Expansions (and stand alone):

Dominion: Intrigue: This expansion stands out by adding “choice” Action cards, which offer players multiple options for their actions on a single card, including “Action – Victory” cards that allow players to accumulate victory points while taking actions during their turn.

Dominion: Seaside: Seaside introduces the concept of Event cards, which allow players to interact dynamically with the game environment by triggering special events during their turn.

Dominion: Alchemy: This expansion introduces Potion cards, a new resource required to acquire some of the most powerful cards in the game. Players will need to skillfully balance their strategy to collect potions while gathering resources and building their deck.

Dominion: Prosperity: This expansion focuses on economic expansion, offering players new Treasure cards and innovative ways to generate wealth. Additionally, Prosperity introduces high-value Kingdom cards, encouraging players to invest in powerful treasures.

Dominion: Cornucopia: This expansion introduces Event cards related to agriculture, allowing players to harness the potential of farmlands to thrive in the Dominion kingdom.

Dominion: Hinterlands: This expansion introduces new cards that trigger during one player’s action, including cards that add more curses to an opponent’s deck. This expansion feels slightly more toxic than the base game but will surely appeal to some.

Dominion: Dark Ages: This expansion introduces piles of cards that aren’t all the same, and cards that are obtained by playing other cards, all tied to the uncertainty encountered on the roads. You might find yourself wondering if you should really allow your opponent to buy the next card before choosing to buy one yourself.

Dominion: Guilds: This expansion introduces Event cards related to trade and craftsmanship, allowing players to exploit commercial opportunities and strengthen their influence in the Dominion kingdom.

Steam Port:

The digital port of Dominion is truly exceptional. It allows players to quickly dive into the game’s universe, thanks to significant in-game aids and a particularly user-friendly interface. The provided aids are clear and precise, guiding new players through the various phases of the game while offering useful reminders for the more experienced. The interface itself is smooth and intuitive, making each game enjoyable and hassle-free. Whether you’re a novice or a Dominion veteran, this digital port promises you an optimized and accessible gaming experience, ideal for quick and enjoyable sessions.

Overall:

In summary, Dominion is a must-have board game for fans of strategy and deck-building. Its rich and varied gameplay, combined with exceptional material quality, makes it an ideal choice for game nights with family or friends. Dive into the world of Dominion and find out who will be the most powerful and cunning ruler!
