Quick Look: Underworld from Key Card Games

WARNING: This is a preview of Underworld. All components and rules are prototype and subject to change.

This is going to be different than your usual EBG review. With an incredibly short timeline to get this game played and back out in time, I'm going to be giving a very brief overview of how Underworld works, and some photos to whet your appetite. Also, since I have to send this review copy along to another reviewer, I'll provide more thoughts and flesh out the below if and when I get more time with the game.

The Game: Underworld feels a lot like One Last Job, a game that failed its Kickstarter earlier this year. It also has some flavors of the Game of Thrones LCG published by Fantasy Flight. Two players show up with pre-constructed decks and fight over three of the above areas, chosen randomly. Influence must be equal to or above the number in the upper-left corner and gives the player the points listed in the lower right. First player to ten points wins.

You'll get there by sending cards from your hand, seen below, to each of the three locations separately and overcoming your opponent's influence there. There's the standard card effects, exhausting cards to gain them, and attaching cards to more cards. Overall, this seems like it could be a decent-enough game. My concerns are timeline; the rulebook and cards are poorly translated, and the rulebook is far too thick to let that slide. This sort of game relies on card interaction and precise windows. This needs to be very, very clean. Somewhat less of an issue is the fact that the cards I have bear a glossy finish. Along with being hard to photograph (apologies in advance), they don't hold up well.

Score: Stay tuned.
