WARNING: This is a preview of Venture Capital. All components and rules are prototype and subject to change.

Rules and Setup:
Venture Capital is a 2-5 player card game where each player will be bidding on Startup companies in order to monopolize the market. With three specific categories available (Service, Gadget, and App) and generic markets with values ranging from 1 through 7, bidding will be fast and furious with the 15 cards available to maximize profits and victory points!

Setup of the game consists of each player receiving a deck of cards numbered 1 through 15, which the player will be using on their turns. Shuffle the Start Up deck, turn over the first card, and let the budding begin.

Each player will take 1 card from their hand and place it face down in front of them. When all players have placed a card down, flip the cards over and whoever has the highest value card down wins the card. In case of a tie, the winner would be the person who had the next highest card down in play.

Game play continues until all 12 cards have been played and won. Once that done, scoring is done to determine the winner.

Scoring is a combination of adding the points on the point cards, then looking at the different categories won, counting the number of each one, and squaring the number to determine how many points they are worth.

Theme and Mechanics:
Theme for the game really has to do with trying to gain the most points by monopolizing the individual categories to increase the multiplier. As business and different categories come up and try to raise the capital, you get to decide if you believe enough in the company to help them, or let someone else go and try to win them. But as the game moves along very quickly, can you keep up knowing what the others are buying, and stop them from getting a monopoly on them while building up your portfolio?

Mechanically, the Venture Capital is a straight bidding game with no ability to manipulate the cards being played or what the other players are building up. Each turn, each player will place a single card down, knowing that card won’t be available until the next game.

Game Play:
Game play is very fast, with games taking between 5-10 minutes for a full game. As mentioned above, mechanically this is a very simple bidding game with zero interaction between the players other than to place the bid. Scoring can take a while to figure out as you’ll be using a count of cards, an addition of the values on them, and a multiplier to determine how many points you’ll be getting.

Artwork and Components:
As this was a prototype, the artwork and component level can and will change between the time of this review and the publication of the game.

The Good:
Capital Venture is a very fast game, with a game taking between 5-10 minutes to play, supporting up to 5 players. It is incredibly easy to pick up and play, and takes very little table space. You can easily have children play this game and have fun (outside of determine final score).

The Bad:
Scoring is a bit tedious in the game, where you will find each player counting the values, then the number of different categories in hand, then multiplying it by the square root, finally adding those numbers together for the final score. Additionally, other than each player putting their bid down, there is no interaction between the players, no way to manipulate the pile of cards being shown, or impacting the cards that someone might have already purchased. The start of the game is completely random, meaning that no one really knows what to start purchasing as everyone starts with a blank slate. We added a house rule where everyone drew a chit out of a bag that represented one of the categories, kept it hidden and worked towards that goal. This helped prevent people from bidding high numbers on the first few cards and hoping that it would work out later.

Final Thoughts:
Capital Venture is a fast game that supports between 2-5 players, and fits in that perfect space between heavier games where you just need to clear your mind and have some light fun in a few minutes. For those who are looking for a game that can be played with their families, this will fit in great.

Players Who Like:
Bidding games, family games.
